I haven’t noted before, but I think would be a god idea get the “I” pronoun with the crossbars.
I have some problems with my english grammar, so I didn’t understand that… What are the crossbars? Sorry for my ignorance…
As long as I know crossbar is supposed to be the little sticks in the uppercase I and what I Mangani said is a rule I guess? In English lettering so that your comic gets easier to read, I don’t know how to write ’em in the computer, though. Blambot got a really good article about it, its right here:
This is probably the biggest mistake seen amongst amateur letterers. An “I” with the crossbars on top and bottom is virtually only used for the personal pronoun, “I.” The only other allowable use of the “crossbar I” is in abbreviations. Any other instance of the letter should just be the vertical stroke version. Although I would debate it, you occasionally see the “crossbar I” used in the first letter of the first word of a sentence, or the first letter of someone’s name.”
Crossbar I’s are strictly optional. Having to use a different font for a single character is more bother than it is worth. (In my opinion) If you read the above, you will see that they say “Don’t use crossbars where they shouldn’t be.” And you aren’t, so you are doing good.
Apparently professional editors are will disagree with me, but I think that the crossbar I is a serif like any other serif. If your font uses serifs, it should use them everywhere, otherwise nowhere. Putting serifs on just a single letter just looks silly. But that is just my opinion, and nothing more.
Wow! That was hell of a long comment!
BTW great comic, I haven’t got the opportunity to read it ‘til now, and I gotta say it’s getting pretty darn better! Keep on the good job!
Thanks for the link. I guess I AM a beginner letterer. Dang!
Now if only I could figure out where the hell is the key to write that crossbar thingie…
Thanks for the comments and the help.
Try a different font. You are using a “sans serif” type of font. Change to a “serif” one. I believe the word in Spanish is “gracia”, “remate” or “patina”.
I don’t believe it’s a rule of sorts. Otherwise, it would be included in all fonts.
I hope that helps!
If I’m right, the font used by Mr. Bachan is WhizBang. I can’t find a character map of this font, but perhaps the following link would help:
Or try with the character | (typing the very first key top at the left). Anyway the link to Blabot grammar is a very good reference to comic’s grammar. Good Luck!
